Visit the three major panda breeding and research facilities
Wolong, Chengdu, Bifengxia

Our China and the giant pandas tour now includes visits and volunteering at world's three best panda research centers.

Wolong, the first giant panda breeding center and the most successful until the 2008 earthquake closed this facility. Newly reconstructed in a nearby potentially less hazardous area, the new Wolong Panda Preserve is nearing completion now. We plan to be among the first to visit there.

Chengdu Panda Base is home to the largest concentration of giant panda researchers and scientists.  This could perhaps be considered the political capital of panda research.

Bifengxia Panda Preserve is the current largest preserve.  This is where most of the Wolong staff and pandas were relocated to following the 2008 earthquake.  This is presently the best location for panda volunteers.

Scroll down to see a more detailed itinerary of the tour options.  We have 6, 7, 9, 11 & 12 day tour options in either July or October.

What's the difference between July and October?
1.  The weather is warmer in July. It may be cool or cold in October. Rain is more likely at the panda preserves in October.

2.  Panda babies are most commonly born in July & August.

3.  July is a more crowded time for traveling in China.  Our October date takes place the week after the long Chinese National Week Vacation.  This usually makes for less crowded condition.

What's included in our BIG China panda trip price?
Meals, lodging in  3 star & 4 star or better hotels, all ground transportation while with the group, domestic air transportation within China, fees associated with our various side trips and an English speaking Chinese guide, plus Keith as the trip leader when available.  Side trips as noted in the trip itineraries.

Can I really pet a panda?
Yes,
our trip includes several days working behind the scenes at one or more Chinese Panda Breeding and Research facilities.  Chores assigned to our group typically include carrying bamboo to the enclosures or maybe we'll be cleaning up panda poop.  One thing we can count on is that we will be right in there with the Giant Panda bears...and if you don't want to work inside the enclosures, you can still come along and be guaranteed the opportunity to pet a panda! No volunteer work required if you don't want to do it.   The only place in the world to get this close to Giant Pandas and their keepers.

At Jones Adventures, our vacation tours are all about helping people achieve their dreams of getting close to a particular animal while simultaneously enjoying a great vacation trip.  Keith has successfully led people on animal encounter trips since 1994.  He takes the worry out of the equation.   You don't need to waste hours, days and weeks of time planning and preparing for a trip, only to finally get there and be disappointed.  That's what our all inclusive tours are all about.  There are other tour operators who offer Pandas as part of their tour. We get you really close to these wonderful animals. Don't be mislead by trips that take you to Beijing or Chengdu to see the Pandas there.  Those locations DO NOT COMPARE to the Bifengxia Panda Preserve. There are no other tour operators with our experience and our success at putting clients together with wild animals in close encounters.  We believe that we have the best record in the world for successfully placing clients in close encounter situations with wild animals.
*Please note that to actually pet a panda you will probably (but maybe not) need to purchase an optional photo opportunity to sit or kneel with a panda. During the volunteering and observation part of our tour you will likely not actually PET a Panda.  Although you will almost certainly be feeding them and placing panda cake or apples or carrots directly into their mouths.

Hotels may change due to availability or local conditions.  We always book into a 3 star or better and normally our hotels are 4 star.
** We reserve the right to change side trip and tour destinations to meet local conditions such as weather, renovation or overcrowding.

*** The work experience may vary considerably from month to month.  Work duties change with the seasons and with the individual health of each panda.  You will work with a panda keeper and your experience will be significantly related to the duties of that particular animal keeper.

Safety and health concerns for the pandas may alter the tour volunteer program in part, at any time.  Frequent changes to the pattern of work and to what is allowed and is not allowed is normal and customary.  These rules and protocols are strictly the responsibility of the panda staff and administrators and beyond our control. Coming along on this tour you must accept that the staff at each panda preserve are experts, scientists and researchers and their decisions are final and not open to debate.  The type of close encounters available as options or offered as part of the program change from time to time.
